You have talked about Terpenes before, but what are they really?

Otto Wallach won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1910 by isolating the chemical group we now know as terpenes.

When his fellow professor at the University of Bonn discovered a forgotten cupboard of essential oils and asked Wallach to study their properties, he studied most nights under candlelight and was the predominant pioneer of essential oil molecules for more than a decade.

He was able to study the molecular structure of EO’s by separating components of various oils by repeatedly distilling then and then studying their physical properties.

Over 150 papers he has written on terpenes. He would be amazed to know that you can now do a quick search in PUBMED on terpenes and come up with almost 350,000 articles.

Pretty amazing right?
